Herbal Medicine: The Future of Medical Care

By: Adelakun Oluwafemi

Man being a unique creation of God is part of the universe. Like other living creatures, man has been provided with food, water and shelter around his habitat. Eco-friendly tribals collect their food, fuel, shelter, housing material and herbal medicine from the forest where they live. Health care, which was part of the traditional culture of the people as defined by modern dictionary to be the “soundness of physical, mental or moral condition, especially freedom from bodily pain or disease” has become a profession in the modern industrial world. However, true health is beyond that, it includes the joy of living, the power and the ability to lead a satisfying and purposeful life.

Synthetic drugs created by the affluent and influential pharmaceutical industries have given rise to the side effects which are more dangerous than the diseases they claim to cure. After suffering for the sin of fleeing from nature, under the bewitchment of the so called modernity and modern day living, man is now loaded with guilt and remorse, coupled with the new awareness about nature and its goodness. This has created a new enthusiasm for “Herbal Remedies” and “Enhancers”. However, the world’s attention has turned to the traditional medical systems in line with Gods plan when he created man. God’s plan for man is for him to live in an earth where he will be experiencing healing from the trees, fruit, leaves, roots and all manner of herbs. “In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the Nations” Revelation 22:2. Nature is God’s wonderful creation that comes with package for our health, healing and happiness. The remedy for the sum totality of all humanity’s various sickness and illness has been pre-dispensed in the lushly growing flora all around us. If nature, by almighty God’s providential and never failing care, has it all, then our intake of poisonous drugs and chemicals could be sharply cut, if not totally shut out.

Rarely but sadly we come across certain aberrations, and harmful chemicals are passed off as herb. That’s that about us as human, however with the regulatory agencies in place, such has now been eliminated. In this sin-sick planet of ours, there is not a creature that is not vulnerable to diseases, but them the remedy is right here in nature, either by way of prevention or in form of cure. God has provided so much for the prevention and cure of all sorts of diseases which plague this planet. That is why he emphasized this in Psalms 104:14 “he caused the grass to grow for the cattle and herb for the service of man”. If a wild animal is ill with a certain health disorder, he goes to his own family doctor; Nature, from whom he picks up his medicine. A herbal something – a root, a fruit, a nut, a leaf or whatever he finds in order to make full and complete use of the resources with which our creator has provided all his wonderful creatures. Using her good instinct, Ms. Parrot identifies the nature’s remedy for her flu or Mr. Tiger for his constipation. And it does work. Why instinct u may ask, because these creatures cannot read what you can read as humans.

While we expose to you the healing nature of plants, you will be convinced that there is no plant that does not serve a useful purpose. There have been many scholars and researchers where our organisation Medi herbs is a major stakeholder have researched on plants and herbal remedies and all you are required to do is to embrace nature and herbal remedy discoveries that will be beneficial to you as an individual, families, and the society at larger, hence we can live a healthier and happier life. A retrospection of the healing power of plants and a return to natural remedies is an absolute need of our time. Herbal medicine is based upon the premise that plants contain natural substances that can promote health and alleviate illness. Modern drugs or conventional medicines are often viewed as impersonal, emphasizing crisis intervention. Not only are they expensive, many of them bring about side effects which are sometimes more dangerous than the diseases themselves. The world Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated that perhaps 80% of earths 6 billion inhabitants rely upon traditional medicine for their primary health care needs and a major part of this therapy involves the use of plant extracts or their active components. Scientist in many parts of the world has carried out extensive research and has proved to humanity the effective use of herbal medicine. Ayurveda, the traditional medicine practice in India has been recognize to having convincing and credible healing powers as well as the Chinese herbal medicine. Little wonder why we run to India in search of healing to vast majority of our diseases when we have a large deposit of untapped herbal remedies in Nigeria. Its about time we begin to develop our vast range of herbal deposits as remedies to our health complications and disorders. While I emphasize the use of plants akin to Ayurveda and Chinese, I do not undermine in any way the use of Allopathy, Homeopathy, Unani, Sidha and other medical adjuncts, neither do I debate the surgical skills of surgeons. In fact I believe there is need to encourage a multiple medical system in our country with keen relevance to traditional practice.

It is sad to learn that modern man with all his knowledge is far from the perfect man created by a loving God. Life softens more suffered than enjoyed. Our life and our total being are under the care of God. However, it is good for everyone to accept the responsibility for one’s own health and live in harmony with the laws of life.
